Prof. Dr. Svilen Maslyankov from the University Hospital „Alexandrovska“ in Sofia became the first surgeon in Bulgaria to be awarded the European Certificate in Breast Oncology Surgery (BRESO) - one of the highest recognitions issued by the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO). The accreditation is distinguished by extremely strict requirements and is awarded only after documented demonstration of medical competence at the highest level.
„The BRESO certificate entitles the certified professional to work in almost all countries in Europe as well as in a number of non-EU countries. It is valid for 10 years, after which recertification follows.“
Strict criteria, outstanding results
To receive the certificate, prof. Maslyankov had to prove a number of key competencies to an international ESSO committee. The criteria included good medical practice, a significant number of interventions performed annually, active scientific involvement and recommendations from leading European specialists in the field.
In the last two years alone, the specialist has performed over 270 breast cancer surgeries using the most up-to-date principles. Along with this, he has presented documented participation in prestigious scientific forums at home and abroad, publications in elite international medical journals, as well as testimonials from distinguished European specialists.

Prof. Dr. Svilen Maslyankov is an active surgeon with over 25 years of clinical experience covering oncologic, plastic reconstructive, minimally invasive and coloproctologic surgery. He holds the position of Head of the Department „Treatment of Benign and Malignant Breast Diseases“ at the Clinic of Surgery of the University Hospital „Alexandrovska“.
Along with clinical practice, prof. Maslyankov is also a lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the Medical University - Sofia, combining surgical activity with the training of the next generation of doctors. He has specialized in renowned surgical clinics in Greece, Spain, Croatia, England, Russia and other countries.
His scientific output includes over 180 publications, cited over 800 times. He has participated in over 70 congresses and conferences. He has won numerous prestigious awards and was recently elected an honorary citizen of Veliko Tarnovo, his hometown.
